I now know for sure it's not a mysql user-permission problem. I have
a working configuration on another server, and when I remove my remote
user permissions from mysql on the old server, I get a different error
("this user does not have permission to...") than the error I get with
the new server ("Failed to connect..."). So here is a summary of
everything I know so far...
I know Mysql is running and listening on port 3306, but it "may" only
be listening locally.
Telnet times out trying to connect on port 3306 to the server Mysql is
on.
In the my.cnf file, "skip-networking" is commented out, and "bind-
address" is removed so Mysql should listen on all interfaces.
I'm confident it's not a mysql user permissions problem since the
error message is different.
I have a firewall rule to allow TCP connections to port 3306.
Mysql version is 5.1.49, included in the OpenbdJam stack.
Any other leads I can check to help narrow down the problem?
