David, never spend 2-3 hours on anything before asking for help! We're
here to help.
The ant script should have worked straight out of the box. I keep a
clean room download of the distribution, so please let me know the error
you were getting. All you need to do is goto the directory and hit "ant".

Btw, it would be cool if you could write a step by step guide how to
compile openbd... because after trying 2 to 3 hours a few weeks ago I
wasn't able to get the ant script to run. The only (basic) java
knowledge I have is with the default? java compiler (and some command
line basic stuff) which came with eclipse, but that is quite different
from the process with the ant script (for which I found a few
tutorials online... yet it continuously gives different errors...
probably due to misconfigurations).
