BS-11 RX/TX-Ports connected?

Hello!
when you look at
http://openbsc.osmocom.org/trac/attachment/wiki/BS11_Configuration/bs11_connections.jpg

you see that the second rx/TX-Ports are connected. Is this absolutly
nesessary?
