My opinion is that if / consists of the usual stuff (/*bin /etc /dev)
that there's no reason for softup, since the partition is not written
to very much, if at all, in normal operation.  This is particularly
true if /tmp and /var are separate partitions.  Softup is not relevant
(AFAIK) to read operations.  /var is a definite candidate for softup,
especially if there's a lot of mail.  It all depends where your busy
apps are writing files (including creating and deleting and other
directory operations).  Those should get softup'ed.  I'm told that
softup is OK for anything, that it is reliable in the OpenBSD sense
of "reliable".

Personally I use softup for everything except "/".  But my machine
has quiet disks most of the time.
