subversion:

(*) depends on python to *build*
(*) depends on swig (what is *that*?), which:
        (*) depends on tcl
        (*) depends on guile
Don't know what "guile" depends on
        (*) depends on ruby
Don't know what "ruby" depends on

Sorry, I don't/won't install python *and* ruby, and will simply
not run that sort of stuff.

conclusion: subversion is Linux-oriented bloatware that purports
to improve on cvs. The improvements on cvs appear to be minimal,
the system cost is *stunning*. Its authors should have improved
cvs, not forked off something with a GUI and a bunch of goofy script
languages (perl, python, ruby and ...) . Of course, Linux purports
to improve on SYSV. (Do they have pty's yet??)

In time, people like me will grow older and die. Then a program
with 47 MB of source code (including html documentation, requiring
mozilla to read) that does essentially this

#! /bin/pseudo-shell-script
        if cmp /here/file1 /there/file1 ; then
                cp /here/file1 /there/file1
        fi

will be acceptable.

The serious adult version of this post is "They should have
improved cvs". The rest is crazy old-fart woodchuck ranting.

Now that I have this out of my system, I'll continue trying
to build subversion. I'll even let it install ruby. But I
promise I will stop if it demands tex and LaTeX. A woodchuck
has to know his limits. there are .tex files in that 47MB.
(My first Unix PeeCee had a 40MB disk.)

I'm doing all this over dialup, which is why I have so much
time to rant.
