The usual answer is "use vi". I never listened to that. OpenBSD's vi is not vim. It is very minimalist. That's the point, but it's still hard to use. I use mg, which is a stripped-down emacs (emacs keys, but none of the emacs bloat). mg is a bit buggy though and missing some features. You don't have these packages because you have to install them yourself. It's more painful at first, but it's so much more clean in general (and once you get the hang of it).
