You may be thinking of /etc/nsswitch.conf or /etc/inet/ipnodes on other
OS's, or of /etc/resolv.conf.tail on OpenBSD. On OpenBSD, modifying
/etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf should suffice. /etc/resolv.conf.tail may
be necessary to force parameters if you use dhcp a lot (see resolv.conf(5)
for more info).

To the OP: IIRC /etc/hosts is set up at install time with entries for
localhost and for the hostname, domain and/or ip that is entered, so
take the default that Peter linked to and substitute "my.domain" for your
domain name (or leave as is if you don't have one) and "noname" for your
hostname. If you continue to have problems, please post your
/etc/resolv.conf and /etc/hosts files.

Good luck,
