Do you mean outbound mail or inbound? (i.e. to port 25 on the
remote host, or receiving on your own 25)?
For outbound mail, even little mail(1) works.
ls | mail -s "My directory" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
sends foo a mail.
For a slightly more versatile client, try pine or mutt. (In the ports
or packages). You will probably still need to run sendmail for the
most fun.
Getting inbound mail directly (as opposed to getting it from an ISP
with IMAP, POP or something like that) means configuring sendmail,
postfix or [shudder] qmail. This is a larger topic.
If you have a firewall, you will need to allow port 25 inbound,
probably using redirect.
Some ISPs block outbound port 25, may Satan gnaw their livers.
There's no telling what's going on with Tbird or Outlook, at least
from me. I don't use them.
If this is all a complete mystery, then you need a broader
tutorial on general Unix system administration.
