Stephen: Yes, /var and /tmp are in the fstab. It must be that there is some subtle mechanical defect with the laptop. After my reinstall, the boot hung and printed out AC97 ... over and over again. I did not remember the text. The lines were moving too quickly. I switched the laptop off and rebooted it again and it worked fine. I performed the built in diagnostic and no errors showed up. Still something could be damaged. It is an old laptop. Thanks for the advice though.
