Have you tried copying the file from the cd-rom to a local file system directory (i.e. /tmp) to remove pkg_add from the equation? If the copy works, then you could try "pkg_add /tmp/iwi-firmware-2.3.gz" instead.
Also, is the iwi-firmware-2.3.gz a valid package (meaning created by pkg_create)?
