Hiya.

Here's the scenario (skip if you don't want the background):

SCENARIO:

I have a friend who has a computer store. It's a Windows shop and they
handle the usual desktop issues.
The infrastructure was put together by another friend a long time ago
and runs Linux - nobody touches it or knows how it works.
Apart from running a dhcp lan for the clients they also have a couple
of domains with web and mail server, firewall and whatnot.
I can get some business building websites through the shop but I need
to move over to a platform I have some familiarity with (and interest
in) - i.e. OpenBSD. This is a big learning curve for me.

At the moment I'm working through VirtualHosts with Apache and didn't
get it right first time (what a surprise) and want to clarify any
naming issues.

EXAMPLE NAMES & NUMBERS:

whois horse.com
Domain Name: horse.com
Name Server: nameserver.horse.com
Name Server IP: 1.2.3.4

whois donkey.com
Domain Name: donkey.com
Name Server: nameserver.horse.com
Name Server IP: 1.2.3.4

nslookup horse.com
Name: horse.com
Address: 1.2.3.4

nslookup donkey.com
Name: donkey.com
Address: 1.2.3.4

So two domains with nameserver on one of the domains.
Both domains (and the nameserver) at the same address.

Obviously I need to supply A records at that IP address.

EXAMPLE QUESTIONS:

Do I need to use horse.com as the domain part of myname?
Can I use donkey.com?
Could I use something else (i.e. does it matter)?

If I must use horse.com in myname do I need to make it
nameserver.horse.com or can I call it hoof.horse.com?

I'm thinking that if I don't call it nameserver.horse.com that I need
to map that name to the public IP address in my hosts file and maybe I
need to do this anyway.
Is this right?

If I wish this machine to respond (i.e. via ping) to other names must
I map those in the hosts file also. For example if I want it to
respond (from the internet) to showjumping.horse.com do I need to map
this or will DNS supply the IP address for the domain (i.e. 1.2.3.4)
and the machine will respond regardless?

The ISP supplies some kind of static mapped name (i.e.
ppp_1.2.3.4_isp.com) which points to this machines static IP address.
Is it reasonable to use this in myname (i.e.
server.ppp_1.2.3.4_isp.com) and to map all other machine names using
the hosts file?

Any advice or rules gratefully accepted.

SUMMARY:

I know that's a lot.

No doubt round two will be how do I get my A records working ...

FWIW I've been poring over the Apache docs and I think I'm 99% there.
Getting naming tucked away will remove one niggling doubt I have.

Best wishes.
