BSD invented sockets. :-)
4.2BSD, that was 20 years ago.
(first versions of sockets are said to have appeared in BSD 3.1.)

are you sure it was netBSD?
they split off 4.3BSD about ten years ago, but perhaps they had to
exclude some code?

i remotely remember that linux didn't implement sockets fully the first
years, and that this was a problem if you tried to use them with INN...
