since there is no --with-openssl= option to configure (hint, hint),
one can achieve that via an environment variable, two lines of my ./Config
file read

OPENSSL=/usr/local/openssl-0.9.6a/bin/openssl \
./configure  \

(...and now i've got to go and install the openssl snap, too, i hit on
the same problem yesterday).
