That part perplexed me. After exporting the cert in the initialization process, there are cacert.pem, cacert.der and cacert.txt files in var/crypto/cacerts. The first thing the import routine seems to do is delete the .der and .txt files and rename the .pem file. It copies in careq.pem but there is no cacert.pem file to be found.
