For reasons I can't entirely explain myself, I booted a much older Puppy (Precise Puppy 5.7.1 Retro) on the target system, to see what would happen. It got to a desktop. If I'm reading the logs correctly, it's using version 0.2.904 of openchrome. I'm at a bit of a loss here, but my best guess is that something changed between that version and the newer 0.3.3 version used in TahrPup -- a change, whatever it may be, that inadvertently broke VX855 support.
