Oops, sorry, this was supposed to go to my personal repo on freedesktop. Anyway, I wanted this to be reviewed and pushed to master. The only commit that is not supposed to go in is the last one "Disable unused-function warnings". The branch can be dropped indeed, after or before being merged.
There is still a fair number of warnings, but this addresses at least some of them.
