is this a driver issue?
My fault, sorry. the randr call should have read :
xrandr --output VGA-1 --mode 1280x720
Use plain 'xrandr' to get a list of all supported modes.
'man xrandr' for more details.
Also, it might be easier to use some desktop applet rather than the
command line to use RandR.
