I've been using the driver from http://linux.via.com.tw/. It's working with an
acceptable stabillity. I also have filed an email report to the mantainer,
hoping for a fully working update/fix. The CPU usage stay low with firefox and
compiz working. I copy-paste my report here (it's late and i wanna go to sleep):
I'm using Via P4M900 with openSUSE 11.0 for Clevo M54SE. This is the most
stable/working packages:
VIA-chrom9-patch-for-openSUSE11.0rc1.tar.gz
This one works fine except it lacks the propetiary xorg, dri, libGL drivers.
chrome9.83-242-u804.tar.gz
This is the best method. I only use it to complete the source tarball
above, the xorg, dri, libGL drivers. It fix gnome-panel, hibernate, 3d,
compiz, xscreensaver.
It's rather unstable. glxinfo and glxgear might broke the X screen (garbled
view) after unknown step(s).
When working, glxgears appear with 3d view rectangular ontop of all on
desktop, and does not attached with the window decoration. The window
decoration may be moved below but the 3d view stays ontop with
<alt><tab>.
viafb-2604-2.6.25-rc6-v16.tar.gz
The framebuffer (console display driver) isn't working. In openSUSE
11.0 it requires kernel customization. The internal module vesafb must
be removed and recompile for vmlinuz and modules. During test it still
not working after kernel reconfiguration with vmalloc() error message
and then freeze. This may be related:
$ dmesg | grep -i fail
PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource #6:[EMAIL PROTECTED] for 0000:01:00.0
