#419: System hang in graphic editing apps (esp. Fontforge)

This is a Samssung NC20, with the Ubuntu 11.10 distro openchrome.
The problem has persisited for several releases, sometimes affecting other
apps (InkScape, maybe Gimp). It got better in one release, Ubuntu 10.10,
but then other actions would cause similar effects. With this release I
have only seen the problem in FontForge.
In FontForge, open a glyph editing window (double-click on any character).
Then click-drag in the window.
The system will hang 100% of the time. The fan revs up, but no further
input is acted upon. I haven't seen anyting in the logs that looks like a
related error.
