Since we're prepping for a release, I'll throw this out.

If I run 'dx', select Samples, then pick AlternativeVisualizations.net, the
control panel comes up and server starts to execute, but I then get
"Connection to the server has been broken".

I'd purify this, but a recent mondo compiler patch has left Purify
temporarily out of commission here. I have traced it enough to have found
that the startupui is invoking DX like this:

dx -wizard -menubar -xrm DX.editorWindow.geometry:200x150-0+0 -xrm \
  DX.dxAnchor.geometry:410x56+0+0 -processors 1 &

and if you then load AlternativeVisualizations.net with this DX invocation,
you get the same error. However, if you use -program
AlternativeVisualizations.net, w/ or w/o the above options, the net runs.

Smells like a memory problem.
