This is definitely not a time/place for "if nobody speaks we can do it". I know I for one am burnt out and struggling and I don't have the time to give this the thought it needs. Many people are not going to be paying attention due to the holiday season. I appreciate Joshua has run into this, like several of us have before, been horrified and is trying to find a way to improve things. I've given this a lot of thought in the past and posted various things about ideas. I've never pushed forward with them as they either weren't right or didn't have the level of community buy in needed. I've very reluctant to either make hard/fast "rules" about variable X needs to use operator Y, or make wholesale changes from one format to another without careful thought and a plan. I've been traditionally very reluctant to try and move forward with changing this without a way to improve things with the other problem variables like IMAGE_INSTALL and DISTRO_FEATURES too. It is really tempting to say "?=" is better or "=" is better and for some scenarios they are, some they aren't. The reality is that what we have today is what everyone's distros/configs work with and if we want to change from what people have working, we need a good plan. Cheers, Richard
