Dear Ferdinand, i agree with you. In real projects i made experience that this leads sometimes to confusion. The proposed field should be the date (point of view) to calculate retrospective order date, expected delivery date of purchase orders (do we have this field?), manufacturing date.
The field delivery lead time is imho onla to print on a quotation to a customer the timeframe we expect to deliver the goods to customers location.
