The error message is not accurate, sometimes the server is configured but OpenERP fail to send email using it.
You shall look at your log and see if prior to ERROR amr openerp.addons.mail.mail_mail: failed sending mail.mail there is an ERROR amr openerp.addons.base.ir.ir_mail_server. This error may indicate what's the real problem. Eg. in my case this was : "Client does not have permissions to send as this sender…" for the form field did not correspond to the account.
