This box is an internal dev box - I'm using a single IDE disk for the
base system and a pair of 300G SATA drives for the filer storage.
I've attatched the dmesg below.  I have tried to reproduce the problem
but have been unsuccessful so far.

Please can you attach and send a full dmesg output to the mailing list?
It looks like you have ATA timeouts according to the brief log message
quoted above.. looking at a more detailed log will help.
