Well I would hardly say it's "useless". Your definition of "production environment" is obviously different than reality would dictate :)

Even if you had a perfect homogeneous "production environment" where every client accessing an Openfiler share was a Windows system using client-side antivirus scanning with to-the-minute signature updates, what if a rogue user decided they wanted to connect to your DHCP-enabled network that was not using Kerberos authentication for giving out addresses? This is %90 of the "production environment"s in existance, even at most of the fortunte 500 financial institutions.

What then? Your "production environment" idea kinda goes out the Window(s) ;)

I agree that AV scanning is low on the "wish list" but I wouldn't write it off as "useless." For one, adding the framework to support a ClamAV VFS stack would open the door for supporting other stackable VFSs, which would be quite a boon for those wanting to implement file-system encryption, compression, or any other useful stackable VFS function.

I'd say 3.5 roadmap =P

Hi All,

Are you asking if virus protection is incorporated into the
Openfiler project?

The short answer is no, although it should be possible in
theory to stack a ClamAV VFS module onto the Samba service
(which is the only real access method that would greatly
benefit from it. I'd assume this would chew up a decent
amount of horsepower so don't try doing this with your PIII
1GHz Openfiler box.

I think, that's exactly that what he asked for... But in case you're using OF in a production environment, it should be cleared, that all clients are using a antivirus tool and a most recent virus definition... Also the fact, that the only implementable access mode for instant virus scanning would be smb, it's more or less useless... ;) Or better: No one needs it really...

Regards,

Tim
