I haven't tried that, but I've considered it and think it is a great
idea to only have to worry about the one physical host. There's bound
to be a certain amount of overhead in virtualizing the disk volumes and
it is probably worse if you don't pre-allocate the space. But, if
iscsi is better, why not use it for the active volumes? What kind of
speed do you get with vmware using an iscsi volume from the same host
(vmware tools might make a difference here)?
