If you are using a new Intel server board, it may require an updated e1000 driver. What model mainboard are you using? I know older versions of the e1000 driver didn't work with the newer S5000 line of mainboards I was working with until a kernel update was released.
The main reason I'm not running openfiler now is lack of driver support. It's based on a slightly older kernel (early 2.6 release I think) and rpath doesn't have a whole lot of drivers written for it. Then again, I was having issues with RAID cards but had no problem with e1000...
