Does anyone have any ideas as to why, further info available if required?

Did you try to rebuild the initrd:
eg:mkinitrd -f --builtin=raid6 --builtin=pata_sil680
--with=scsi_wait_scan /boot/initrd-2.6.22.13-0.2.7.smp.gcc3.4.x86_64.img
2.6.22.13-0.2.7.smp.gcc3.4.x86_64
