I'm a a bit new to SDN and openflow and recently started looking at SDN as
a viable solution to a problem I've been thinking about in a broad sense.

What's attracting me to openflow and SDN is network virtualization and
rapid deployment of networking switching topologies. However it seems
everyone has a slightly different definition of what SDN is and capable of
in a real-world scenario.

My goal for Openflow/SDN would be a use case where I could deploy layer2/3
switches in my infrastructure and my application would send updates to a
controller about the destinations I'm trying to target and automatically
build a virtual isolated network and populate routing table configurations
on adjacent switches based on the target sources as being defined by the
application on the fly.

Is anyone doing this today with Openflow or any other SDN type protocols?

How practical would it be to implement something like this on a large
scale?

Am I being a bit too nieve here?

Thanks again!
