It is tagged that way since rms is extremely cautious when it comes to
endorsing licenses, but in practice it isn't treated that way.  It's
been around for a lot of years, of course, and many of the most
important existing free fonts, notably the base 35 PostScript fonts from
URW, are released using it.

I am pretty sure there is no active effort at the FSF to change the
wording of the exception, or do anything else regarding font licensing.
