Well you could be right. But. Modes for font development and distribution have diversified hugely over the last 30 years. Can't see that diversity reversing back to any single 'primary model'. If anything, more diversity moving forward seems more likely. You maybe right on the web though, at least untill software allows fully-locked-in fonts to be served securely, universally and seamlessly to web users.
