After some research, I finally answered my questions: getting the latest sources:
hg clone ssh://anon at hg.opensolaris.org/hg/opengrok/trunk opengrok The annotate link is enabled on these latest sources. I did not investigate whether the RC1 drop has an issue or if I somehow got the configuration right. I wrote an installation tutorial for Ubuntu, let me know if someone is interested.
