I'm not an expert at estimating market size and it can be difficult to get such information because most of the ODBMS vendors are privately held. I have seen estimates, however, that the size of the market in 1998 was approximately $200 million and that the market is growing at a rate of approximately 30 to 40% each year. You can expect that market growth will accelerate as Computer Associates rolls out the new release of Jasmine sometime this year. Market growth is obviously a numbers game. Computer Associates has thousands of sales people who will be helping their customers see how an ODBMS can supply solutions to their application problems. I believe this will have a significant slipstream effect on all the ODBMS vendors. Once a potential user considers one ODBMS vendor, they are likely to widen their focus to include other vendors. That should have a significant impact on the growth of the market." ObjectStore (now calls themselves Echelon) claims a 40% market share. It is interesting to note that this company and a few other OODBMS companies I looked at are turning themselves into XML database companies. My impression is that OODBMS never broke out of it's niche markets and now XML is seen as the path into the mainstream.
