Oh, it works allright and has been around for many years (classified as
"mature" and excellent review in Dr. Dobbs Journal). Very active mailing
list and dedicated developers (one of them a German MD). There are a few
good cross platform applications available written with wxWindows such as
the email client Mahogany.
You can't get even close in terms of performance and flexibilty with browser
based solutions.
