HHS SECRETARY TOMMY THOMPSON ISSUES NEW HIPAA COMMENT PERIOD
HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson issued a statement in which he confirmed that the new
effective date for the final privacy rule is April 14, 2001. More importantly, Secretary
Thompson went on to say that the unanticipated delay caused by the rule's not being
transmitted to the Congress until Feb. 13 "creates an opportunity to ensure that the
provisions of this final rule will indeed work as intended To ensure a thorough review of
these important issues, HHS is opening the final regulation to a 30-day public comment
period. The department will review the comments it receives to determine whether changes in
the final rule are needed."
