My understanding is that SAP-DB is a bit like Borland Interbase, and to
some extent Mozilla: they were open sourced because it was no longer
profitable for their respective owners to keep developing them on a
commercial basis. Now that is certainly a lot better than not open
sourcing them at all, but it does mean that they are "astroturf" open
source projects rather than true "grass roots" initiatives. Does that
matter? Not really - it all depends on whether a community adopts them
and eventually loves them to bits, and whether they have sufficient
technical merit. Seems like they both have the latter, and there seems
to be a growing and active Interbase community. Maybe all the enthusiasm
for SAP-DB happens in German? Or maybe it is too early - SAP has a
release schedule for the source code for SAP-DB - only parts of it are
available so far, I think.
