Glad you asked,
I think the best place to answer you further questions is

http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/altircfaq.html
and in general to look at http://www.irchelp.org

But in essense,
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat
which you can think of as something like
yahoo messenger or AOL's instant messenger.

To get you started,
Can you tell me what Operating system you run?

That we we can decide on an IRC client.

I think th best one for a new user would be called

Xchat, at www.xchat.org.

The reason i choose an IRC server instead of the a messenger or IM

is that IRC is much more flexible and this particular group

that our channel is located on, supports opensource software.

I hope that clears things up,

but to get you started i would download and install xchat

and choose the 'irc.openprojects.net' irc server.

This whill send you to one of multiple host servers

where can type '/join #openmed' and then ask for help as needed.

Or please email me again for more help
