Why not copy what most ethernet drivers do and just log a message on
link negotiation state changes? ie like the:

eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x45E1

Maybe something like:

ib0: link up, 10Gbps, port active, lid 0x10/16
