Russ, lsiutil utility has a 'persistent mappings' option which retains HDU names when you change one of them.
If you disable it and/or set it to 'EnclosureSlot', which in my lsiutil is option 13 from the extended menu, it does not change names anymore. Cheers. Maurilio.
