However it looks like I already have jdk1.6.0_26 installed under /usr/jdk,
and I have no idea how to remove it :(

unpack the 32 and 64 bit tarballs under instances,
then create a symlink in /usr/jdk
finally, update the "latest" symlink to the version you wish to have by
default
