One comment here. One of the sites I find most useful that's similar to this is Beyond Linux from Scratch. http://lfsbook.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/svn/index.html It's not actually Linux-specific, and it's handy to work out dependencies, useful configure flags, download sources, and even just a list of what applications would be worth installing.
