Hipster should never be considered "production ready" ... so if you want it in production, you should consider it unusable.
When it is ready for testing, I'm assuming that it will be copied to /dev, which will allow a lot of users to upgrade, and in the future will move to stable, if it is considered to be stable. PS. I have had hipster crash on me, but I believe this is some interaction between X, firefox and flash.
