I am not sure but as far as I know KVM needs EPT and this is not
available for the Q6600.

Of course OI will run with the processor but only zones will work and
not kvm.
One can also run VBox headless in an Illumos zone:
<URL:https://wiki.openindiana.org/oi/7.2+VirtualBox>

KVM on Openindiana also needs more testing, when having Intel EPT-enabled Intel CPU, so trying it out and leaving feedback, could be valuable.

VirtualBox is the best bet for pre-EPT CPU, (Even VirtualBox haven't been yet compiled/packaged specifically targeting Openindiana/illumos).

There is also work on KVM , that could be continued working further on, to port on pre-EPT, Intel-VT and AMD-V CPUs, but it didn't get till production level.
If interested for KVM/illumos working without EPT (pre-ept):
https://github.com/jclulow/illumos-kvm

That also goes for AMD EPT equivalent support, Rapid Virtualization Indexing (RVI/NPT) that is not yet supported in SmartOS KVM implementation:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_Virtualization_Indexing#Rapid_Virtualization_Indexing

It is also a question on OS/Net level (illumos) and not on just distribution level (OI), even illumos haven't been integrated in mainline illumos:
