$ pfexec gmtp # shows "No device attached"

Only step left is to click on 'Connect' and voila! (see attachment) - somehow I misinterpreted "No device attached" as tool being unable to detect it!

To summarize:
a) "pfexec mtp-detect" # triggers dialog: allow MTP on android
b) If device is locked, you might need to unlock screen and accept MTP
c) "pfexec gmtp" # and click to Connect button

d) Update: it does not require "pfexec gmtp". Looks like only "gmtp" is enough.
