But I *really* don't like those long winded disk names.

You might learn to appreciate them given that part of the name is very likely
printed exactly on the side of your disk drive.  This can be very helpful.
Strictly from memory (mine -- which may well have a couple of incorrectly
flipped bits). A portion of the device name is created from the disks serial
number. So as Bob correctly points out; this makes it extremely simple to
identify the correct drive when not-so happy things occur in your data pool. :-)

versions were not very helpful at all.
