I have a couple of machines with the same BMC, a machine with an SE7520BD1 and an Intel server blade. That BMC is quite underpowered and cannot take the load of doing continuous connections/disconnections. It also occasionally returns insane results to simple commands, which may be what is hanging ipmitool.
OpenIPMI doesn't handle this well, either, something I need to work on, but it complains loudly about it. My machine with the 7520 MB now has the Intel AXXIMPRO module installed to give it a better BMC; it works quite a bit better. If you can get one of those, I'd recommend it.
