To use IPMI remotely (over the LAN) you do not need to have the driver 
installed.

To configure a box for use on the LAN, you might need the driver on the 
machine where the IPMI controller is for doing the actual configuration, 
if your box doesn't come with a utility to configure it.  For that, 
OpenIPMI has a "CONFIGURING_FOR_LAN" document, and ipmitool is a nice 
utility, too, for configuring this.
