Because sound broke in both flavors, I wonder if it is really due to a
deprecated API.

Status in “openjdk-6” package in Ubuntu: New

Bug description:
KGS cgoban3 client remains silent on my box after release upgrade from 10.04 to
.10.

I was used to this error when other programs such as firefox showed via sound
preferences -> applications they were using some (which? -- libasound?) sound
resource. Shutting down those programs sound resource claims remedied the
situation. Now, even on an empty applications list and on a xterm-only-session,
Java refuses to emit sounds. This is true for both now Sun's and OpenJDK's
flavor.

Sounds in general and via aplay work as expected.
