Further I have found that when TBird crashed it lost the inbox contents of two mail accounts. Now this is supposition because I didn't think to check this at the time of the crash but it occurred twice and based on the new mail in the iboxes it happened on the days that TBird crashed.
Since I can't use a mail client that is randomly wiping out inboxes I took the only simple workaround - uninstalled open jdk, icedtea etc. and installed the Sun jdk in its place.
