I'd prefer the explicit "metal". mtl was chose because - It aligns with our existing abbreviated names for pipelines like d3d, es2, sw - The metal library also uses 'MTL' as prefix all metal library types like MTLDevice, MTLCommandQueue, MTLCommandBuffer and more..
